In a year 2 English lesson, a teacher breaks down parts of a narrative structure within a story to assist students to develop their oral language skills. The teacher sets high expectations and challenging but achievable learning goals so all students can achieve success, and uses game-based activities to allow her students to break tasks down and help each other to solve problems. The teacher recognises the importance of creating learning that is relevant to the lives and experiences of her students and their families, and that an authentic learning environment will assist students consolidate their learning.

Valerie's presentation at the 2009 International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI) in Vancouver BC inspired a thorough revision of BC's elementary and high school curriculum that was deployed gradually between 2013 and 2016. The primary curriculum changes revolved around raising awareness of systemic racism, gender discrimination, and practicing constructivist theory, thus setting the stage for weaving Indigenous Ways of Knowing throughout. The resulting drop in 2018 PISA scores brought BC scores lower than they had ever been since PISA was introduced. While it will likely take a generation to see the result of what Valerie inspired, it is certain that it is the students who will bear the consequences, not Valerie herself.
